Type One Energy Secures $200 Million for Its Fusion Power Programme

Type One Energy has completed a $200 million Series B financing round to advance its stellarator-based fusion programme. Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Clutterbuck Capital co-led the investment, with participation from backers including Lowercarbon Capital, Siemens Energy Ventures and SiteGround.

The Knoxville company is pursuing a development model that connects fusion technology with utilities and industrial partners. Its Project Infinity work with the Tennessee Valley Authority centres on the former Bull Run power station site in Tennessee. The programme includes the Infinity One engineering prototype and a proposed commercial plant called Infinity Two.

The distinction between those stages matters. Building and testing a prototype is an engineering milestone; delivering reliable electricity at a competitive cost requires additional technical validation, construction and operating capability. The financing announcement does not mean a commercial fusion plant is already producing power.

For the startup, the round supports a capital-intensive route from research to infrastructure. Its commercial prospects will depend on whether successive development stages reduce uncertainty sufficiently for utilities and other partners to commit to larger projects. The involvement of industrial investors gives the programme a broader foundation, while leaving execution as the central challenge.
