Canada commits $50 million to Canadian Food Innovation Network

Minister of Industry Mélanie Joly announced on Oct. 15, 2026, a $50 million federal investment in the Canadian Food Innovation Network to help domestic food processors adopt advanced manufacturing technology. The funding is delivered through Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Canada's Strategic Response Fund alongside Canada's National Food Security Strategy.

The Canadian Food Innovation Network, an industry-led non-profit organization focused on technology adoption in the food and beverage sector, is contributing $8 million from its own business activities. The combined $58 million supports the organization's Food 4.0 strategy, a five-year action plan designed to raise overall productivity across Canada's food sector.

Through the strategy, the group helps manufacturers, processors, and supply chain operators integrate Canadian-made automation and digital tools into their operations while offering direct funding to foodtech businesses building those tools.

“Canada’s food processors are working hard to keep prices in check, but many are doing it with equipment and systems that haven’t kept pace with their global competitors,” said Dana McCauley, the CEO of CFIN, in a statement. “Food 4.0 is CFIN’s plan to close that gap.”

The federal initiative aims to assist more than 200 small and medium-sized enterprises in adopting automated systems and digital manufacturing processes. According to projections, the funding will create approximately 300 new jobs and support more than 450 total full-time equivalent positions in the sector.

The non-profit also expects the public investment to trigger up to $200 million in follow-on private investment. To support this growth, the organization will expand its Food Automation and Systems Transformation Program, a dedicated funding stream for small and medium-sized food service businesses.

In addition, the non-profit plans to build out its online innovation platform, known as YODL, and expand its team of regional innovation directors. These steps are projected to increase the organization's national network from 9,500 members to 20,000 members.

The funding arrives as Canadian consumers deal with rising food costs linked to ongoing trade disputes with the United States and global inflation. Canada's National Food Security Strategy places advanced technology adoption at the center of efforts to strengthen domestic food-processing capacity and secure supply chains.
