Scottish government matches £10 million for defence technical colleges
The Scottish Government has agreed to match a £10 million UK Government fund to build two Defence Technical Excellence Colleges, bringing total investment in the initiative to £20 million.

The Scottish Government agreed on Oct. 16 to match a £10 million UK Government investment to establish two new Defence Technical Excellence Colleges in Scotland. The match-funding agreement creates a combined £20 million fund dedicated to technical skills training for Scotland's defence industry.
The project forms part of the broader £50 million Scottish Defence Growth Deal. Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander launched the deal on March 12, when the UK Government originally committed its initial £10 million sum. That offer remained conditional on receiving equal backing from the Scottish Government.
The two new colleges will be located in the East and West of Scotland to directly support regional defence clusters. Their programs will focus on specialized technical pathways, including defence engineering, advanced manufacturing, and maritime technology. The facilities will also work alongside engineering and innovation centres previously announced as part of the growth deal.
According to figures published by the UK Government, Ministry of Defence spending in Scotland currently exceeds £2.5 billion per year, directly supporting 12,200 jobs across the country.
“In March we announced a £10 million commitment to develop two Defence Technical Excellence Colleges in Scotland,” Alexander said in a statement on GOV.UK. “I’m pleased that the Scottish Government has now agreed to match fund these colleges to give our young people the skills they need to secure high-skilled, well-paid careers in Scotland’s defence sector in the years to come.”
Luke Pollard MP, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, also welcomed the decision. “Finally matching DTEC funding is welcome news for Scottish careers,” Pollard said. “The colleges will provide routes into high-skilled, well-paid roles in the defence sector which is crucial to the work of keeping the UK safe around the clock.”
Industry analysis included in the announcement estimates that demand across the UK defence sector could reach up to 50,000 additional jobs by the 2034/35 financial year.
