Innovate UK opens £5 million competition for SME artificial intelligence deployment
Innovate UK has published details of a £5 million grant competition to help small and medium-sized UK businesses deploy operational artificial intelligence solutions.

Innovate UK has published details of a £5 million grant funding competition aimed at helping small and medium-sized enterprises deploy artificial intelligence technologies into live operational environments, according to a notice published by UK Research and Innovation on 13 October 2026.
The competition, titled BridgeAI Deployment Catalyst: AI for operational systems, offers UK-registered businesses funding to integrate artificial intelligence and machine learning tools into systems that perform, control, or coordinate operational activity. The total grant funding pot available across the competition is £5,000,000.
According to the funding notice, the opportunity formally opens for applications on 21 October 2026 at 9:30am UK time. The application window will remain open until 8 December 2026 at 11:00am UK time, after which the competition will close to new submissions.
Consortium and Eligibility Requirements
The competition is restricted exclusively to collaborative projects. Individual companies applying alone will not be eligible for funding, and all applicants must meet specific partnership criteria outlined by Innovate UK.
The lead organisation on any application must be a UK-registered AI small and medium-sized enterprise (SME). The lead SME must already possess an existing artificial intelligence or machine learning solution that has reached Technology Readiness Level 5 to 6 prior to applying.
In addition to the lead AI SME, each application must include at least one UK-registered medium or large organisation serving as a deployer for the technology. Consortia may choose to include one additional project partner, but the total number of organisations in any project consortium must be strictly two or three organisations.
Deployment Focus and Program Background
Projects funded through the scheme must focus on the practical deployment of artificial intelligence into operational business processes. Targeted applications include solutions for operational decision systems, assurance processes, decision-support tools, and compliance monitoring functions.
The grant initiative is delivered as part of the broader BridgeAI program funded through UK Research and Innovation, which encompasses Innovate UK alongside seven research councils and Research England. The BridgeAI initiative aims to accelerate the industrial adoption of artificial intelligence and machine learning across the United Kingdom economy.
Detailed application guidance and requirements for prospective applicant consortia are accessible through the Innovation Funding Service portal ahead of the October opening date.
