Genesys Capital launches $40 million life sciences seed fund
Genesys Capital has launched a $40 million seed fund with $30 million committed by investors including RBC and the University of Toronto to back life science spinouts.

Venture firm Genesys Capital has launched the Genesys University Seed Fund, a $40 million initiative aimed at funding early-stage life science startups, according to a report published by The Varsity on October 11, 2026. The fund has already secured $30 million in committed capital toward its total target figure.
The new fund was established through a partnership between Genesys Capital, the University of Toronto, McMaster University, and Venture Ontario. Genesys Capital will serve as the primary fund manager responsible for capital deployment and portfolio administration.
The initial $30 million in capital was raised from a group of limited partners. These limited partners include the University of Toronto, McMaster University, Venture Ontario, financial services company RBC, and the Temerty Group. Together, these organizations provided the initial capital base to begin investing in spinout companies.
Allocation and target investments
The Genesys University Seed Fund intends to deploy capital across 10 to 15 startups originating from university and hospital laboratories. Under its initial deployment strategy, the fund will invest up to $1 million apiece into each selected spinout enterprise.
Beyond these initial checks, the management team has structured follow-on capital reserves for portfolio companies that show significant growth. Select high-promise opportunities will be eligible to receive up to $5 million in total venture funding from the fund.
The capital deployment plan targets life science startups at their earliest commercial stages. By providing up to $1 million per company initially, the fund intends to support 10 to 15 separate spinouts emerging from institutional research labs.
Addressing commercialization challenges
The creation of the pool of capital addresses commercialization bottlenecks that commonly prevent university lab discoveries from reaching commercial markets. Early-stage scientific research often faces delays or funding gaps when transitioning out of academic laboratories and into independent corporate entities.
With $30 million of the $40 million goal committed, the fund provides dedicated venture capital for life science innovations originating in Ontario research institutions. The limited partners—including RBC, the Temerty Group, Venture Ontario, McMaster University, and the University of Toronto—will support Genesys Capital as it evaluates hospital and university spinouts for initial investments of up to $1 million and follow-on checks of up to $5 million.
