Canada adds $500 million to Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative

The Canadian government committed $500 million over five years on Oct. 13, 2026, to expand its Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative. Evan Solomon, the Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, announced the top-up in Ottawa.

The new commitment brings total federal funding for the initiative to $700 million, up from $200 million. The program supports artificial intelligence adoption and commercialization across Canadian small and medium-sized businesses.

“The question is not whether AI will reshape our economy. It is whether Canada will capture the opportunity,” Solomon said in a press release. “The RAII will help Canadian businesses adopt AI and Canadian AI firms scale from here, so that the technology, talent, and economic value … remains anchored in Canada.”

The initiative is delivered through Canada's seven regional development agencies. The program is part of “AI for All,” the national artificial intelligence strategy launched in June 2026.

Target Sectors and Regional Delivery

The initiative targets key industries including health and life sciences, energy, resource development, transportation, agriculture, manufacturing, and robotics. It was originally launched under the previous Liberal government to assist small and medium-sized businesses in bringing technologies to market, but has since expanded to support wider ecosystem development.

Regional development agencies such as PrairiesCan and PacificCan have previously distributed program funds to incubators like Saskatchewan’s Co.Labs and the provincial health authority in British Columbia. More than half of Canada's artificial intelligence firms are located in Southern Ontario, according to official figures.

Adoption Trends and Program Deadlines

Business adoption of artificial intelligence in Canada grew from 6 percent in 2024 to over 19 percent in 2026. However, rates of workplace training, literacy, and trust in the technology continue to lag, according to BetaKit.

Federal officials framed the investment as part of ongoing efforts to capture economic benefits from global technology expansion, despite broader industry concerns regarding safety, regulatory demands, and return on investment.

Application openings and submission deadlines for the expanded funding will vary across each of the seven regional development agencies.
